Kidney Specialists: Their Function

A nephrologist or kidney specialist specialised in internal medicine and had obtained additional training in the field of treating patients who experience kidney disorders.

Nephrologists received training and acquired their qualifications in the medical treatment of kidney diseases, dialysis therapy and transplantation surgery of the kidneys. Their education qualifies such a kidney specialist to approach kidney diseases in a comprehensive way because kidney disorders can affect the functioning of more organs in your body. Kidney specialists can either dedicate themselves to adult- or paediatric nephrology.

Nephrologists play a significant role in decision making whilst concurring with their patients or/and their families, regarding the withdrawing or withholding of kidney dialysis. One of the nephrologist’s main tasks is to use the artificial kidney, when treating patients suffering from acute as well as chronic kidney failure.

However a kidney specialist doesn’t conduct kidney surgery, but may be required to conduct a kidney biopsy. This procedure is done by inserting a narrow needle through a small incision in the skin into your kidney to get a sample of your kidney-tissue. Many times a nephrologist observe patients, operated by a surgeon when in aftercare.

The kidney specialist will discuss your condition with you and will point out whether you need a kidney transplant or kidney dialysis. Your nephrologist may participate in aftercare to assist with controlling your blood pressure, probable interactions of medicines or other problems which may occur.

Your family doctor, a surgeon, gynaecologist, or other internist may refer you to a nephrologist, when you are experiencing symptoms like acute hypertension (high blood pressure), kidney stones, hematuria (blood in your urine), and protein in urine, deterioration of kidney efficiency or kidney failure. A lot of diabetics don’t have entry to urine examination or quality clinical guardianship for the early detection of damage to the kidneys, kidney dialysis or a kidney transplant, in cases of kidney failure. An early referral to a nephrologist can improve their survival rate when their kidneys fail.
