The pain caused by a kidney stone is absolutely excruciating and can strike instantly. The immediate intention of patients is to pass these stones as quickly as possible.
However, there are many options to treat kidney stones. Such treatments include: lifestyle and diet changes, physical treatment, conventional treatment options, prescribing medicine and surgery which is the last option which has some risks.
With a kidney condition referred to as Nephrolithiasisor renal calculi, patients can present symptoms including: acute colic pain in the renal area which occurs suddenly. This extreme pain is basically caused by the stretching, spasm and dilation of the critical obstruction in the ureteral region.
- Passing Large Kidney Stones
Whilst small kidney stones usually pass by itself with extreme pain, it is another case where large stones are concerned. A recent study was conducted in the Queensland hospital ofTownsville, under the leadership of Jeremy Furyk.
The research team came to an amazing conclusion. Just 28-days after they visited the emergency section for all sizes of kidney stones, they found the following results: 87% of patients who received flomax kidney stone treatment, (also called Tamsulosin) had passed their stones in comparison with almost 82% of patients who received treatment with a placebo!
However, the scientists observed that there was not a significant difference. Notwithstanding, what they observed further is that approximately 83% of patients, who received the flomax (tamsulosin) treatment, passed their stones in comparison with the 61% of patients who was treated with a placebo medication! These were patients with big stones (5 – 10 mm long).
This amazing study can be found in the online published Annals of Emergency-Medicine, dated 17 July 2015.
According to Furyk a million plus, Americans are suffering from kidney stones on an annual basis. He stated that although the results regarding the smaller type of kidney stones are not so bright, it is especially patients who suffer from the really large kidney stones who can benefit from the
flomax kidney stone treatment!
As time is usually the greatest cure for patients suffering from the smaller kidney stones, Furyk’s advice is that physicians at emergency sections should consider tamsulosin ( flomax) treatment.
The chief of the Urology Department of theWestchester North Hospital (Mt Kisco) in New Yorkstated that this drug therapy was not effective in the passing of small stones. However, concluded that anything assisting the passing of larger stones is worthwhile. This can prevent prolonged pain whilst surgical intervention can be avoided.
According to Bromberg (who was not involved in Furyk’s research) the inception of medicines to treat kidney stones has raised both the care and enhanced the passing rates, whilst pain was reduced. Other effective drugs according to Bromberg are doxazosin and terazosin, which he classified in the same league as tamsulosin (flomax).
Another specialist, treating kidney stones, is Dr Hoenig, He is the Urology Department’s chief at the Arthur Smith Urology Institute in New York (New Hyde Park). He stated that when kidney stones obstruct the ureter, the passage located between the bladder & kidney, unbearable pain many times brings people to the Emergency Room.
Hoenig concluded that although a lot of stones pass by itself and giving that the pain can be controlled, with no fever present, an observation period for natural passing can be seen as reasonable. However, to follow up is absolutely crucial. If there is an obstruction, which is not treated, it may result in kidney damage.
